Originally from upstate New York, Maria Caruso attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1986. From there, she went on to attend law school at the University of Baltimore, graduating in 1989.
During her time in law school, Ms. Caruso clerked for various law firms and government agencies, including the Federal Government and Felony Division for the Office of the Public Defender for Baltimore City. She was admitted to the bar in December 1989.
In 1990, Maria Caruso became an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender for Harford County in the District Court of Maryland, where she gained a great deal of experience handling misdemeanors in District court and quickly promoted to practicing for the Felony Division in the Circuit Court of Harford County.
There, she handled the most serious cases including murder, drug charges, aggravated assault, and more. Ms. Caruso built an outstanding reputation by NEVER LOSING a jury trial where she was lead counsel.
In May of 1999, Ms. Caruso left the office of pubic defender opened her private practice, focusing on Criminal Defense, Estate Planning, Personal Injury, as well as all aspects of Family Law: Divorce, Custody and Visitation, Child Support, Protective orders, and more.
Maria Caruso has also acted as a "best interest" attorney who focuses on the interests of the children stuck in a custody battle. Whichever area of family law she is assisting you with, she will do it with compassion.
Ms. Caruso is a member of the Harford County Bar, Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), and American Bar Association. She has served on numerous state and local bar committees and was the treasurer of the Executive Committee for the Young Lawyer's Section of the MSBA and the Harford County representative to the Solo and Small Firm Committee of the MSBA.
She has been appointed to the Inquiry Committee of the Attorney Grievance Commission as a member of the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorney's Association and a Board of Trustee member for the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers ("MICPEL").
Ms. Caruso is a volunteer speaker at 2nd Saturday, a divorce advice workshop supporting the community with knowledge and resources they need to survive the divorce process and move forward with confidence toward a new life.
