Originally from upstate New York, Maria Caruso attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1986. From there, she went on to attend law school at the University of Baltimore, graduating in 1989.
During her time in law school, Ms. Caruso clerked for various law firms and government agencies, including the Felony Division of the Office of the Public Defender for Baltimore City. She was admitted to the bar in December 1989.
In 1990, Maria Caruso became an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender for Harford County in the District Court of Maryland where she gained a great deal of experience. After that, she began practicing in the Circuit Court of Harford County.
There she worked with many cases (serious felonies, drug charges, murder, etc.), and built an outstanding reputation by winning jury trial record — not losing the ones she was the sole counsel.
In May of 1999, Ms. Caruso opened her private practice focusing on criminal law and traffic matters, as well as all aspects of family law: divorce, custody and visitation, child support, protective orders, etc.
Maria Caruso has also acted as a "best interest" attorney who focuses on the interests of the children that are stuck in a custody battle. Whichever area of family law she is assisting you with, she will do it with compassion.
Ms. Caruso is a member of the Harford County Bar, Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), and the American Bar Association. She has served on numerous state and local bar committees and was the treasurer of the Executive Committee for the Young Lawyer's Section of the MSBA and the Harford County representative to the Solo and Small Firm Committee of the MSBA.
She has been appointed to the Inquiry Committee of the Attorney Grievance Commission, as a member of the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorney's Association, and a Board of Trustee member for the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers ("MICPEL").
